Illustrated with 6 color plates and over 200 original sketches by Charles W. Reed. Original red hard cover in good condition. Gold-gilt lettering on front cover. Black design on front cover, lightening in spots. Shelf-wear on cover includes 4 corners frayed, exposing cover-board. Chips along spine including through gutter to board on top of front cover and chips on top and bottom of spine. Shelf-wear and soiling on cover. End pages have aging and some soiling. Front inside cover has brown pastedown with gold-gilt lettering 2 ¼ by 9 inches. Text block pages have aging and occasional soiling. Plate 5 is loose. Actual size of book: 5 ¾ by 9 inches. 398 pages. There are multiple missing pages. Also, there is a log/ledger at the end of the book with columns for “Name,” “Residence,” “Occupation,” and “Style.” Several pages of this log have been filled in. This is an attempt to record army life during the Civil War in detail. The book includes chapters on enlisting, life in tents and log huts, offences and punishments, raw recruits, foraging, the wagon trains, the arm mule, and many other details. Military history.
