Fraying on top and bottom of spine. Crease on top of back cover near gutter. End-pages have aging. Pen writing on inside front cover. A newspaper clip on inside back cover has darkened back end-pages where it has been in contact. Frontispiece photo of Helen Hunt Jackson in good condition. Title page has red and black ink, in good condition. Text block pages have light aging and occasional finger soiling. Actual size of book: 5 ¼ by 8 inches. 308 pages. Illustrations include black and white illustrations at chapter headings, plus additional full-page illustrations on glossy paper. This is Jackson’s popular novel based on her early experience with California Native Americans. The novel is was ranked as one of the two best ethical novels of the 19th century.
