“Sannillac, A Poem,” by Henry Whiting, with notes by Lewis Cass and Henry R. Schoolcraft, Esqs. Published by Carter, Hendee and Babcock, Boston, 1831. 1st edition. Rare. Original hardcover has soiling and fading, especially along outer edges and spine. Top of front cover has some color running from water, and the running continues through several of the first pages of book. Corners bumped, back corners have cover-board exposed. Spine bumped and lightly frayed. Black lettering on off-white pastedown on front cover. End-pages have foxing/aging. Text block pages have light foxing/aging, and occasional soiling. Aging along outer edges of text pages. Binding in good condition. This long poem in verse tells of the wars between the Iroquois and the Wyndots, the purpose more to exhibit manners and customs of the native people as opposed to constructing and outline of the actual history of these tribes. Material came from the manuscripts of Governor Cass. Actual size of book: 5 by 8 inches. 155 pages. 1st edition. Rare. Native American. Literature.
