Original green cover with gold-gilt lettering and design on front cover and spine has shelf-wear. Volume I has top corners bumped, all four corners frayed with a spot of cover-board exposed. Spine has fraying and chipping, especially along top and bottom. Tearing along back gutter. Inside front cover split, and barely holding. Inside back cover split. End pages have aging. Chipping on back end-pages and 1 inch square pastedown. Pencil writing on back end pages, pen writing on additional front pages. Frontispiece has foxing/aging and the frontispiece design fades into proceeding pages. Text pages have aging, occasional soiling, some foxing. Pull-out maps: Battle of Stone River, 11 ½ by 9 inches, has creasing, chipping and aging, partially loose from binding. Map of Shenandoah Valley, 5 ½ by 15 inches, in good condition with light aging. Volume I is 500 pages. Volume II condition points: Original green hard-cover in good condition with shelf-wear. Four corners frayed, all but back, top corner have cover-board exposed. Several small cuts on back cover. Fraying on top and bottom of spine. End pages have aging. Spine split but holding on inside front and back cover. Foxing on additional front pages. Frontispiece has foxing/aging and the frontispiece design fades into proceeding pages. Map of Battle of Cedar Creek in good condition, 9 by 11 inches. Map of Indian Campaigns of 1868 & 9 has chipping and creasing, 9 by 9 inches. Volume II is 486 pages. Actual size of books: 5 ¾ by 9 ¼ inches. These memoirs of the life of P.H.
