“Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860 – 69.” By Edward Whymper. Published by John Murray, 1900. 5th edition. Scarce. With maps and illustrations. Original blue hard-cover in good condition. Gold gilt border on front cover and gold-gilt lettering and design on spine is clean and bright. Shelf-wear on cover including 4 corners worn to expose a small section of cover-board. Fraying on top and bottom of spine. Black end-pages have light chipping along outer edges. Front end-pages have been taped along binding. Additional front pages are aging, with light chipping and writing in pen and pencil. Also an ink stamp is on the backside of frontispiece. Title page has writing in blue ink and a black ink stamp. Top of contents page is stamped in the same black stamp. Text pages have aging, occasional foxing and soiling, some pencil writing. Actual size of book: 6 ¼ by 8 ¾ inches. 468 pages plus a selection of maps. Maps include “Vertical Section of Snow, 5 ¼ by 13 inches in blue and white, map in good condition with light aging. Map of The Valley of Zermatt, and the Central Pennine Alps, 11 by 15 ½ inches, in black and white with light aging and severat tears along creases. Map of the Valpelline, The Valtournanche and The Central Pennine Alsps, 14 ¼ by 16 ¾ inches in black and white with light aging and a tear along one of creases. The chain of Mont Blanc, 8 ½ by 20 inches, in black and white with light aging, otherwise good condition. The Matterhorn and its Glaciers, 8 ½ by 11 ½ inches in black and white, with light aging, otherwise in good condition. Several loose pages around 283 - 288. This is a the story of ascents and descents amongst the Alps by the author, with some additional history.
