1877 Toys and Pastimes Illust. Science Book
(Item: SOLD 310)
Science In Sport Made Philosophy In Earnest by Robert Routledge. London: George Routledge and Sons. 1877. 1st edition. Very GOOD. No dust jacket as issued. An editing of Dr J. A. Paris' "Philosophy in Sport Made Science in Earnest..etc.) first published early in the nineteenth century ("written fifty years ago.." according to the editor's preface). The book begins as if it is going to be a novel about school and schoolboys but it is not really a novel at all. Toys and pastimes are used to illustrate scientific principles, particularly those of physics. For example, there is a chapter on magnetic toys to show how magnetism works. Hardback. 8 by 5 1/2 inches. embossed gilt red cloth, 332pp, 4pp publisher's list. Black-and-white vignettes and numerous black and white line engraved illustrations. Cloth edgeworn, spine ends lightly chipped. Hinges starting. Else book and pages are clean and tight. Condition VG minus. Scarce Victorian Childrens book.
