Genuine 1866 American Express Company $500.00 Stock Certificate, Hand-signed by founder and President Henry Wells. Dated May 1, 1866. #1027, 3 shares of $500.00 each of 18,000 shares capital stock issued May 1st 1866. Issued to Alonzo Richmond of Buffalo, New York. Exact size: 8 1/4 by 12 inches. Condition: VG. No tears, stains or other damage present. The original American Express Company was founded on March 18, 1850, and specialized in the express transport of goods and valuables throughout the Mid-west and between New York City and Buffalo. The original founder Henry Wells was born in Thetford, Vermont and moved to New York as a child. In 1836 he was employed as a freight agent on the Erie Canal. He would later go on to found his own company. In 1841 Wells hired William Fargo and soon the two men formed the American Express company. Wells was president of the company from its founding in 1850 until 1868. In 1851 Wells and Fargo with other partners (Butterfield) founded the Wells Fargo Company. The company held a near monopoly on banking and express services in California for several years. Henry Wells died in Scotland in 1878 after founding some of the biggest companies in the world.
