Original Southwestern Watercolor in Original frame with Provinence. Exact Size Framed: 12 3/4 by 9 3/4 inches. Original documentation pasted down on verso; "Sketch by... Frank Sauerwein., One of the earliest painters of the Southwest". Notes made by original owner, Mrs R.J. Wattles, Cousin of Hilda Faunce Wetherill of Mesa Verde. Two newspaper clippings of Biographical information on Wattles. One clipping has a handwritten signed statement by Ruth Ware that she purchased this painting from Olive True in 1970...It was originally part of R. J. Wattles Southwest Art collection. Condition: VG. All original and not laid down. Some light uniform age-toning to paper. Sauerwein, Frank Paul; Born 1871 Yonkers, New York. Died 1910 Stamford Connecticut. Studied at Art Institute of Chicago: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and with his father at the Philadelphia School Industrial Arts. Sauerwein works are currently held by Museum of New Mexico, Sante Fe, Southwest Museum, Los Angeles, consisting of the James V. Hamlin Collection. Of notable interest is that Sauerwein in his later years would move to Colorado for health reasons. It is for that reason that he is considered one of the earliest and finest Southwestern painters of New Mexico and Colorado, respectively. Painting is unsigned and in as found condition.
