"History of Wyoming" by C.G. Coutant. ill. BW Photographs, Maps and Drawings. Laramie, Wyoming: Chaplin, Spafford & Mathison, 1899. 1st Edition. 8vo-over 7 3/4"-9 3/4" tall. Hardcover. Hardback. Good/No Jacket as issued. Original 3/4 leather, with pebbled black cloth and gilt Wyoming State seal on cover. Gilt title on spine. Exact size: 9 1/4 X 6 3/8 inches. 712 pages. Illustrated profusely with 76 plates, maps and line drawings, with portrait of author, frontis. Condition is good, with slight fading/spotting on outer side of covers, not affecting the seal: three small tears in leather at top of spine, each less than 1/2" and one 1/2" tear at bottom. There is water damage marks to the edges of the plate pages, only, in only the first half of the book, generally not affecting the plates themselves. Age toning only very slightly beginning on pages. Contents cover period of the "Spanish Ocupation", and then the French Canadian Exploations". From that point the focus is on all of American explorations, trappers along with reports and expeditions up to the opening of the first highway, 1835-1843, Fremont's two expedition are covered, along with reports of Yellowstone, from the earliest reports in 1829 and 1833 and afterwards. An extensive "History of Fort Laramie", followed by accounts of the Oregon Emigration, the Mormon Emigration, Fort Bridger and then many chapters on the Indian "depredations", "troubles", and the "bloody years on the plains". Events along the Bozeman Trail and the Red Cloud War of 1867, government policies, and a description of the Wyoming Territory in 1868 and the South Pass gold discoveries, 1842-1869, lead up to the second to last chapter on "Building the Union Pacific" railroad. The final Chapter 45, "Pioneers and Origin of Names", concludes the volume. Intended to be a history in three volumes, Vol2. and 3 were never published. First edition. Scarce U.S. and Wyoming History.
