Transitional Wearing Blanket ca.1880
(Item: SOLD 82)
Rare, Navajo transitional wearing blanket circa 1880. Blanket measures 87 by 55 inches and consists of heavy, single-ply, handspun, churro wool wefts on cotton warps. Blanket has an unusual, berry derived, purple and cochineal red dyed bands at the sides; with a simple natural brown lightning bolt design to the interior. Edge cords are three-ply with three areas in need of repair (see photos); there are two very small 1 inch holes to interior of rug at the side extremities, which are hardly visible due to thickness of the wool. Interior of rug has no holes or repair, but does have a lot of original dirt and soiling, not to mention some urine stains; some of which will come out with a good cleaning. There is no insect damage what-so-ever; but there is some red bleading to side bands. Blanket is extremely heavy and was most likely woven for indigenous use and not the tourist trade. Blankets of this age are very rare. I will be happy to supply further photos to interested parties only and will guarantee item as described.
