“A History of the Calvary,” by Colonel George T. Denison, Published by MacMillan and Co., 2nd edition, 1913. Dedicated to Alexander II, Emperor of Russia. Original red hardcover in good condition with shelf wear/soiling. Spine has aging and wear. Fraying on top and bottom of spine and along gutters, occasionally exposing coverboard. Corners bumped and worn, exposing coverboard. Coverboard partially exposed along bottom of front and back cover. End pages in good condition with some soiling/wear. Text block pages in good condition with occasional soiling/wear. Some chipping along outer edges. Pages are rough-cut. Actual size: 9 ¼ by 5 ¾ inches. 468 pages. This book was written to be entered into the Emperor of Russia’s competition on the best history of the calvary. It won the first prize in the competition after the first edition was published. George Denison traces all the striking features of the calvary beginning with the first time horses were used in war and tracing changes to the present. The only changes from the first to second edition are in the concluding section of the book “The Organization, Armament and Employement of Cavalry in Modern Warfare.” Scarce. 2nd edition. History.
