Ezra's Bowman of Shu

“Ezra’s Bowmen of Shu,” Printed by Adams House & Lowell House Printers, Harvard Yard, 1965, #19 of 87 copies. This is a folio broadside of lithograph of Henri Gaudierbrzeska linedrawing and Henri’s letter to John Cournos. The blue/green paper cover is in good condition with fading/aging, especially along outer edges. Some chipping along outer edges. Small tears along fold and bottom corners of cover near fold are bent. Some soiling on cover. Lettering on front and back cover is in black on white square pastedowns, both in good condition with slight soiling on back. The line drawing is in blue ink. Letter and description of letter by Guy Davenport in black lettering. Font is 14 point Bulmer Roman on cream, van gelder paper with deckled edges. The cream paper is 13 by 20 inches in good condition with some creasing. The cover is 14 by 21 inches. The broadsides are attached to folio by a white thread through the top. There is some creasing in the folio/broadsides. According to back pastedown, this is the first publication of the letter and drawing. Guy Davenport, who writes the explanation of the letter, befriended Ezra Pound when Pound was incarcerated at St. Elizabeth’s hospital and wrote his dissertation on Pound. Henri was introduced to Cournos by Pound and refers to the Chinese bowman in Ezra’s poem in the letter. Limited edition. Art. Literature.
