“The American Stock Book,” Published by American Live Stock Publishing Company, J. Monroe Smith, Manager, 1890, Chicago. Revised, enlarged, improved edition. Original black hard cover in fine condition. Graphics and lettering imprinted into front cover and spine. Bottom corners bumped and worn, exposing coverboard. Top cover corners slightly bumped and worn, exposing small amount of coverboard. Chipping and wear on top and bottom of spine. Soiling on cover. Cover split but holding to spine along bottom gutter of front cover and top gutter of back cover. Decorative end pages have soiling, slight chipping. Inside cover has been taped at binding, presumably split but holding to spine. Glue/pastedown residue in several spots on additional front pages. Purple stationer’s stamp on additional front pages. Text block pages are in good condition with some aging/fading. Many black and white illustrations in good condition. Actual size of book: 7 by 10 inches. 615 pages plus advertisements. This is “A plain, practical, and modern treatment of the several branches of live stock, their care in health and treatment in disease, fully illustrated, by explanatory engravings, and adapted to the every day use of the American farmer and stock owner, treating in five distinct departments, the horse, cattle, swine, sheep and poultry….” History.
