RAYNER,Frances (1834 - 1889) Gouache on Paper Circa 1880. Signed F. Rayner at bottom lower left corner. Undated. Untitled. The painting portrays an interior cathedral scene depicting penitentes before an altar and tomb. Likely an Italian Baroque cathedral. Size: Unframed is roughly 15.5x 21.5 inches; Framed: 39x33 inches. Condition: Good with 1.5 inch closed tear midway at bottom margin edge. Else, very good. Frances was born in Piccadilly, London on 19th August 1834, and was christened at Newman Street Catholic Apostolic Church, St Marylebone, London, on 8th February 1835. Born into a prominent family of artists,Frances was a late entrant to exhibiting (being at least 25 years old) when she had her first one woman show. Like her famous father, Samuel Rayner, she specialised in architectural subjects with a religious leaning. She exhibited one painting, a watercolour titled "Church of St Andre, Antwerp" at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London in 1861 while she was living in Brighton. She travelled extensively on the Continent, painting many cathedral scenes like in the Mosque at Cordoba. This painting is a characteristic example of her later work. Price: $2,400. Fine Art.
