MORGENTHALER, Charles A. (1893-1980) "Bathing Beauty," dated 1941 is mastic varnish on canvas. Both signature and dates are painted in oil. Condition: Good. On original stretcher; canvas is flat and still relatively tight. Exact dimensions: 40 X 31 inches unframed and 45 X 36 framed. Morgenthaler is best known for his illustrations, mural and oil paintings. Most of his life was spent in Missouri; he studied at both the University of Missouri and the Art Institue of Chicago. In 1938, Morgenthaler took work at the prestigious Brown & Bigelow Company in St. Paul, Minnesota, famous for their calendar designs. After two years, he was sent to Georgia where he took a job with the war department, creating illustrations for military training films. He was there until 1942, when he returned to St Louis to spend most of the war years working on his oil paintings. He is well noted illustrator for the USO; where he sketched well over 2400 drawings of military personelle and service members in the military hospitals after WWII, and during the Korean and Vietnam wars. This particular painting, "Bathing Beauty" is an exceptional example of his portrait paintings; depicting a woman standing at the beach, like a calendar girl. Price: $2000. Charles A.
