SAMPLER LARGE 1834 PENNSYLVANIA ELMIRA EVANS
(Item: SAMPLER)
SOLD....$985....
Pleased to offer today the fine
needlework sampler of Elmira H. Evans, of Pennsylvania, finished
June 6, 1834. A large sampler...almost square 17 1/2 inches...for
this period. Young Ms Evans was 10 years old when it was finished.
Pictured are two CAPITAL letter alphabets...one larger than the other...,
one small letter alphabet and her numbers.
Her poem reads:
From low persuite exhault
my mind
From every vice of every
kind
Nor let my conduct ever rend
to wound the feeling of a
friend
E.H.E. SAMPLER JUNE
6, 1834
The lower third of the sampler is
full of typical Pennsylvania images: 2 dogs, Tulips...& other flowers...possible
Distelfink birds...& another bird...looks like a Magpie sitting in
a tree..., and a vine with budding flowers running down each side.
Elmira has included her name twice
in the sampler and also a second name. A bit of research and a little
common sense (and luck) tells us this history of Ms Evans:
She was born in 1824, and
most likely in Pennsylvania and she finished her sampler in 1834.
Six years later, she married and added her maiden name vertically on the
left of the poem and her new married name...and date of May 1, 1840 vertically
on the right side of the poem. The married name is "E.H. Galer".
Working with this information we
got lucky and found the following genealogical information:
Araminta Galer 5/22/41...Infant
daughter of Lewis C. & Elmira Galer...McNaul Cemetary...Curwensville,
Pike Township...Clearfield County, Pa.
So, Elmira married at age
16, in 1840 and lost her first child one year and 22 days later...probably
at birth. We also found some Civil War information on a Lewis C.
Galer (enlisted August 31, 1864 into 200th Penn. Infantry). This
was probably Elmira's second child, born around 1842 and enlisted in Union
Army at age 22. He married Meary Spangle, in Polk County Iowa in
1872 and applied for a civil war pension, as an invalid, in Iowa, in 1890
at age 48. The information on the son is logical guess work, but
we believe the information on Elmira's marriage and the loss of her first
child is the very same Elmira Evans. The same cemetary list shows an Elizabeth Evans who died in 1824 at age 21, and could well be the mother of Elmira and died in childbirth. The current owner of the sampler
puts it in possession of her Grand Mother, in Pennsylvania in the
early 1900's.
CONDITION...MATTING
& FRAMING:
The sampler is MODERATELY
DARK but it is clear. There are lots of light blue
and green colors in the stitching, which is on typical linen. There
are three noticeable small brown stains and a few others not so noticeable.
There are small tears on two corners and a small hole in upper right corner.
Sampler has been professionally framed in recent years. It is hand
stitched to acid free paper which sits atop silk, which forms a white border.
Outside of that is a gold edge and a light blue border, which compliments
the blues in the sampler. Back is tidy with a full brown paper.
Please check our other listings
as we are also offering a large needlework of a young girl with birds and
a dog, which came from the same estate and may well be accomplished by
Ms Evans.
Will pack properly and ship promptly.
