SUPER 18th C. IRON VIOLIN GATE or DOOR LOCK
(Item: VIOLIN GATE LOCK)

Believe this is an extra special thing!
The "Violin" was found in Pennsylvania about 40 years ago and went into an extensive early iron collection.  Believe the pictures can speak for themselves, but will offer a few embellishments: it is obviously all handmade of iron and is beautifully scratch decorated; it is 14 inches long and 5 1/2 inches across the body, the body is 1 1/4 inches thick and it is 13" wide at the bar.  The key is surely original and the lock functions well; when disengaged, the fret part of the violin releases from the body and opens by sliding off the iron bar.  We presume it functioned as a gate entry lock or somehow secured a large door.  From its early form and function, patina and rose headed brads, we assume it to be probably 18th Century.  We know it was found in Pennsylvania and its heritage prior to that is unknown.
Have seen one other, pictured in Maine Antique Digest, a number of years ago, which also carried a Pa. heritage.  It has been in our personal collection for 10 years; we are in search of a smaller home and are selling some "keepers" as part of re-sizing, so, watch our auctions!
The Violin comes with a buyer satisfaction guarantee.
