19th C. AMERICAN LANDSCAPE J.B. SWORD #1 THIS AUCTION 19th CENTURY Landscape #1, Oil on Board, by James Brade Sword...1839-1915. A lovely early fall or harvest scene, with farm in background, probably rural Pennsylvania or New York in the early 1880s. The board is 21 1/4" by 13 1/2" and the very nice gilt frame is 27 1/2" by 19 1/2". We believe the painting is in original condition and has never been cleaned or repaired. The below pictures were taken in sunlight and images show paintings brighter than they are in indoor light. The back has delicate, probably original brown paper with tape repair. Inspection through the torn paper shows the board to be: "Russell's Canvas Board...Pat. March 18, 1879." Signed lower right, as pictured: "J. B. Sword." We guarantee this painting to be as noted. Sword
was born in Philadelphia in 1839 and lived and painted in Pennsylvania
most of his life. He also painted in the New York Adirondack Mountains;
Newport, Rhode Island; and on the Jersey shore. He was a popular
painter of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and genre. He died in
1915. He lived the life of a professional painter and was a member
of the Artists' Fund Society; Philadelphia Society of Artists; and the
Art Club of Philadelphia, of which he was a founder. His works are
in the collection of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and his
1911 portrait of J. W. Hones, Speaker of the House, hangs in the Capitol
Building in Washington, D.C.
