EARLY TURNED BARBER POLE ~RED WHITE BLUE GOLD
(Item: BARBER POLE)
SOLD $850Back to work
after the Holidays and we have some pretty neat things to offer!
This auction is a 66 inch tall, circa 1880s wooden turned Barber
Pole. About 9 inches at the widest and 8 1/4 inch diameter at the
bottom and a 1 3/4 inch hole drilled through the center.....suppose for
mounting on a post. One side shows a fair amount of wear on the
paint the the other side is good, as pictured. Bottom has what
looks like a fairly fresh cut, so it may have once been taller.
Standing 5 1/2 feet tall, the Pole is a dynamic display. A great
presence for any type of "Hair" business or as we have used it as a
Red, White and Blue piece of Americana! Found on a Ranch near
Cimarron, Kansas, which is near Dodge City, Kansas, so speculation
says: it came from the glory days of Dodge! The top Ball turning
is Gold, as it should be, to represent the "blood letting" pot or the
"Leach" pot. The history of the Barber business is reflected in
the traditional Barber Pole; the "blood letter" hung his used bandages
out to dry and they blew in the wind and wrapped around the pole.
Red and blue representing artery and venous blood, the white for clean
bandages and the "gold" for the leach pot; other people report a more
red, white and blue patriotic history; so, probably a combination of
both. Besides the paint mention above, there are some old checks
in the wood and some on the top of the Ball, as pictured. Suppose
there could have been some over paint through the years, but for the
most part, the paint looks great, old dry and crackly. The wood
is pine and it weighs nearly 40 pounds. Will pack properly and
ship promptly. UPS "OVERSIZED" SHIPPING $30CLICK "HERE" FOR A
