EARLY LARGE PENNSYLVANIA ANGEL DECORATED BRIDES BOX

Very Special!, early brides box from Pennsylvania. Very large and beautifully painted. Lovely and graceful free hand brush stroke Tulips and Leaves circle the box lid and sides of bottom and top-front and center is the "Angel" or the "Bride". Looks like box is made of pine wood and the paint seems to be all original. This is one of the finest decorated and one of the earliest Pennsylvania Boxes we have ever owned and it is unusually large for the type...16 1/2 inches long, 10 inches wide and 7 1/2 inches tall, with lid in place. Probably dates to late 1700s or early 1800s, judging from the decoration, patina and construction. Although only about 1/8th of an inch thick, the wood is not particularly fragile. Overlapping and lace construction (most of the original wood lace is gone), wood is all hand planed. There is enough old shrinkage that someone, long ago, put some tiny finish nails into the edges for stability. Box has been in our collection for a number of years and it came to us with a Pa. provenance; we're expanding our online antique business and upgrading our computer equipment, so, we're having to sacrifice a few special old things for a few fancy modern things.....oh, well.... but look for lots of special things to come!
