BEADED CUP & MIRROR WHIMSEY ~AMERICAN INDIAN C. 1915
(Item: BEADED WHIMSEY)

We can give you a little history of this awesome piece of Native Americana; please have a look, we've included lots of pictures. We've been pleased to own this grand object for about 12 years. We purchased a large collection of American Indian Bead work from a gent who had taken possession in the 1950s in a trade for a group of his antique guns. We saved for ourselves this beaded "Whimsy" as being the most unusual item in the collection; there were many mocs, par flesh bags, an early sash, a child's vest, pipe bags, etc., etc., all of which have found other homes. Now it's time for this one to stand on the top shelf of some other collection.
The "Whimsy" consists of a thick two sided slightly magnificied mirror, which is firmly standing in an early footed goblet, probably flint glass, all of which is covered whimsically with beads, which seem to be all stitched with fine wire. One inch wide bead bands cup the bowl in green, blues, red/burgundy, purple and yellow. The outside of the mirror is a covered with bands of beads and approximately 60 colorful banners.. Atop are two American flags on either side of a centered unknown flag of dark blue beads with a light blue center cross. The American flags are correct with 48 stars and 13 correctly placed red and white stripes. A heavy, unseen wire surrounds the mirror and attaches firmly into a solid material center in the goblet. There is a more delicate bead design around the foot of the goblet and a braided string falls from the center to the ground. The first 48 star American flag was used in 1912, so, we suggest this Whimsy is of that age and we comfortably guarantee it to be the first quarter of the 20th Century. Standing 13 inches tall, the diameter of the mirror is 6 inches and the Goblet is 5 1/2 inches tall. It is graceful, yet bold and sturdy and there is no reason it will not survive another 100 years. We do not know the original source of the work and we presume it is one-of-a-kind and is unique. We will gladly add to this listing if any experts out there have a valued opinion to offer.
