BLUE & WHITE SPONGEWARE BOWL W. BAIL HANDLE ~ANTIQUE Here is a superb example of a
stoneware, blue and white sponge ware milk crock with its original bail
and four small feet. The feet were designed for heat and air
circulation. There is some minor crazing on the inside of this sturdy
piece. There is also an old 'crack' on the 'ear' where one side of the
bail attaches. It looks as though this crack took place in the making,
as the crack starts at one of the holes where the wire loops through to
hold the bail in place. Also the 'crack' stops near the top of the
'ear,' and the ear molds back together. Our thought is that the 'crack'
appeared sometime after the hole was drilled for the bail wire. This does not affect the integrity or aesthetics of this beautiful bowl. Otherwise, this crock has one tiny flake on the rim, too small to photograph. The crock measures 9 1/2 inches from 'ear' to 'ear,' and 4 inches high.
