1 1/2 Gal BLUE SPONGEWARE LIDDED STONEWARE CROCK
(Item: STONEWARE JAR LIDDED)

An antique blue spongeware pickle jar / crock with lid in Excellent condition. This barrel shaped stoneware pickle crock is hard to find and absolutely gorgeous. The bottom is marked either 'S.3,' or '5.3.' It looks closest to 'S.3;' this is drawn into the stoneware. It is adorned by three rims below the top and three rims above the bottom. As the pictures show, the lid's blue is a little brighter than the crock's blue. None the less, we believe the lid is genuinely as old as the crock and it fits exactly. There is a 1/2 recess in the lid that matches up to the same size recess in the inner rim of the crock. This is where a pickle fork, or ladle handle could stick out from the crock. There is an old hairline crack in the crock that starts just above this recess and extends about two inches down inside the jar. The crack is only on the inside and looks like it could have happened in the making of the crock. On the opposite side of this crack there is a similar, but smaller one that starts just above the inner rim and ends at the bottom of the inner rim. The inside is glazed and there is some crazing; otherwise this jar and lid have no other cracks, chips or crazing. This is genuinely a rare wonderful antique stoneware pickle jar. It measures 9 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches at its widest diameter.
