BLUE HEAVY SPONGE DECORATED STONEWARE JUG ~SPONGEWEAR

A very rare, dark cobalt sponge ware jug signed H.E. Wallis (Walling, Wallin) or possibly some other variation, dated 1892. The signature and date appear to be drawn in pencil on the bottom of the jug. We have sold a number of stoneware and spongeware jugs throughout the years and have yet to come across one with such dark blues and thick sponging. Aside from the signature and date on this jug, we know very little. All but the bottom and top rim are glazed. This jug is in Excellent condition; aside from a couple of small chips on the bottom rim, there are no cracks or crazing. We are offering this jug at a modest reserve, confident that its rarity and quality will bring a proper price. The jug measures 8 3/4 inches tall and 5 3/8 inches in diameter.
