PRE 1920 NAVAJO RUG WEAVING 76" X 46" ~4 CORNERS
(Item: NAVAJO RUG LIN)

Pleased to offer today another special, tight weave, early and graphic Navajo rug from a local estate. The estate acquired this rug from a high-end collector from Grand Junction, Colorado. No specific history has followed with the weaving, so the following description, other than size and condition, is our speculation. The rug is 76 inches by 46 inches and has an exceptionally tight weave. The edge has loss and repairs, as pictured, and is in need of restoration. Obviously, the rug is worth the required attention but is definitely displayable as is. About half the white border is frayed (and some with crude repair), but little or none of the loss goes into the outer edge of the brown "Greek Key?" border. So, the obvious restoration would simply be to remove the outer white border, thus making the rug one inch smaller all around; a few tiny moth holes, but certainly not severe; could no doubt use a bath, but there are no hard stains or bleed.
Rug is bold and graphic with the wide border and broad diamond center and the "spikes" of the diamonds are nicely contrasted with red, brown or white peaks, as pictured. Believe it dates pre 1920 and probably is from the Four Corners area. We found a few similar examples, one being Plate 16 from the J. B. Moore 1911 catalog (also pictured on page 47 of "One Hundred Years of Navajo Rugs" (this rug is pictured in black and white, so it is unknown to us if the colors are similar).
