ALASKAN HAIDA INDIAN CARVING OLD COUPLE BY ROBT. PEELE
(Item: PEELE CARVING)

Found this wonderful carving in a local estate sale a few years ago and pleased to offer it today for auction.  Nineteen inches tall and carved of heavy solid Cedar, a wonderful image of an old Indian man and woman, signed "PEELE" on the back of the base.  Internet search for "wood carving" Peele reveals Robert Peele of Prince of Wales, Alaska, whose Haida name is Saaduuts (meaning: "Thanks Mother Earth for All She Provides") and is renowned for teaching and carving solid Cedar canoes.  So, our presumption is that this exquisite carving is the same Peele.  If anyone knows more about Robert or this carving, we will gladly add to the listing.
There is a 1 3/4" long piece of Cedar missing from the right bottom of the man's blanket/robe and can be seen in the picture.  This spot is not as smooth as the polished surface of the carving, so felt we should mention this small spot. The rest of the carving is in Excellent Condition and the form and expression of this old couple is simply wonderful; please have a look. It weighs just over six pounds.
