EXCEPTIONAL 1895 CRAZY QUILT ~BROWNIES & FRIENDSHIP Check us out often in the next few
weeks...going to be offering a lot
of "keepers"...our annual "sell-it-all-and-start-over" sale is underway. This Auction: From an Estate in New York, made up of 16 squares and a 3 inches wide border, this Crazy Quilt is phenomenal! The colors are vibrant and the detail is exceptional. Decorated with a number of Brownies, as pictured below, including grasshoppers, an owl, a 'China man' getting his hair pulled, a man in a top hat, an Indian, just to name a few. There are also, a number of different embroidered flowers, a bird and a thresh of wheat just to name a few. There are also multiple sets of initials, each on a different squares, so it was probably a friendship quilt; and three sets of dates, two 1895 and one 1896. There is too much detail on this quilt to describe in words, so we have taken a number of close pictures to help give you an idea. The pieces are mostly silk, with some velvet and some suiting mixed in. It is pieced together with cross stitch and fancy stitch embroidery, backed with an all cotton red and black poke-a-dotted backing. The quilt is nice and thin, just how we like them. There are approximately seven pieces of silk that have fraying and another dozen where the silk has been removed, revealing the blue and white checkered backing. Of the pieces that are frayed, a few are on the border. Otherwise this crazy quilt is in Very Good, Clean Condition. It is free from stains and odors and looks outstanding on the wall or bed, measuring 74 inches square.
