H. A. STEVENS DECOY CO. DECOY ~RARE GOITER NECK 1 0F 2 This is one of two Vintage H.A. Stevens
Company Redhead Drake, "Goiter Neck" duck decoys available this week in
separate auctions. For those unfamiliar with Steven's Decoys, it should be noted that they were advertised for sale as early as 1880 and the last decoys were made about 1902. Steven's business was in Weedsport, New York until the factory burned until 1902. Each Steven's decoy was hand made and carefully comb and feather painted. Though neither of these birds are stamped, the Steven's decoys are easily identifiable when not marked because of the anchoring staple and recessed holes on the bottom with poured led for balance and the "round" body. The Steven's 'Goiter neck' decoys are not as commonly documented in the decoy books which perhaps suggests that they are harder to collect. ~THIS AUCTION, REDHEAD #1~ From the H.A. Stevens Company, Circa 1900, this Redhead Drake 'Goiter Neck' decoy has the remnants of the original paint. The black paint on the tail, breast, around the neck and head, as well as the white mid section with faint gray combing marks on the back are what's left of what we presume to be the original paint. There are also signs of a later brown over paint that is now mostly gone. Obviously a working duck, as it was lightly hit by shot and has some nick to the body throughout. Don't know if the head peg extends out because of shrinkage or because it has slightly moved over the years, as pictured. Regardless, it is stable and the head is well attached with a very slight give. There is a 1 long inch crack in the neck and a thin crack in the front breast as can be seen in pictures. The eyes on this decoy are both missing. Otherwise it has wonderful form, with the 'goiter neck' and is a sturdy old bird with lots of character and history. It measures 12 1/4 inches long and 6 1/2 inches widest.
