EARLY CONNECTICUT SHOREBIRD ~OLD PAINT ~VOORHEES COLL. We're pleased to offer another early
shorebird from the Connecticut "Voorhees" decoy collection. Mrs.
Voorhees was an art teacher of the well-knownVirginia carver Mark
McNair when he first started making his birds in Connecticut and she
was also a serious collector of decoys on her own; the bird has been in the Voorhees collection since at least in the 1960's. This
Shorebird, perhaps a Peep? is obviously quite early and comes from the
collection without a makers name; will speculate it was made in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Perhaps the little bird's maker
will remain unknown, however if anyone out there has a suggestion for a
maker we will gladly offer additions to the bottom of the
listing. The bird looks to have its original color or paint;
seems to be only one dark coat with traces of the base wood....pine or
cedar?...showing through; there is a small spot of white on top of the
dark paint on the belly. The top surface is distinctly crazed, as
pictured. There is no way of knowing if the beak is original; it
was constructed to wedge through to the back of the head and although
it is mobile, as you would suspect from shrinkage, it will not remove.
(Please also note that when you move the beak at its tip there is
movement of the beak at the top of the head but there seems to be a
separation or partial separation somewhere inside the head and there is
some wood loss where the beak enters the front of the head.) Size
is 8 1/2 inches from forehead to tip of tail and it is about 2 inches
at its widest. The exposed part of the beak is 2 1/4 inches
long. An early investment quality decoy from a noted collection. Please check our 100% eBay feedback with Gold Powerseller status and bid with confidence. Also, check the two Steven's "goiter neck" Redheads we have offered today in other eBay listings. Will pack properly and ship promptly. UPS INSURED DOMESTIC GROUND DELIVERY $10.
