GRAPHIC & COLORFUL ANTIQUE HOPI PLAQUE ~13 1/2" DIA.

This is one of three Native American
Baskets we are selling this week, all from a local estate in Colorado.
They were owned by the grandmother for many years before they were
handed down to her grand daughter. We have no other specific history on
the baskets, other than they were very well cared for over the years and they are of investment quality.
~ THIS AUCTION: A 13 1/2" DIAMETER HOPI PLAQUE ~
The origin of this Hopi Plaque is unknown to us, as is the exact age, though we feel comfortable from the patina in dating it first quarter of the 20th Century or earlier. Please note: we are Not Expert in native american baskets, so please ask the right questions if our descriptions are unclear. It has red, yellow, green, black and orange coloring in the design. Not sure what the image represents; is it a butterfly? It is constructed of a stiff wicker type material; the exact plant is known. It has a nice tight and very even weave, measuring approximately 16 weaves per inch. The parameter is wrapped with a wider material which appears to tie together the outer ends of the 'ribs' which support the inner structure of the plaque. It has the traditional overlapping 'handles' that cross in the center. One side of the plaque is convex and the other more concave.
CONDITION:
The side where the center sinks (concave) is slightly more faded than the side where the center bulges up (convex). There are half a dozen very small nicks to individual weaves throughout the plaque, resulting in only a few very minor breaks, though none show through to the other side. The outer wrap is well attached, though a four inch section has consecutive 'ribs' which are detached from the plaque, causing the wrap to be a bit looser in that spot. All of this is very minor, as the overall condition is Good and very sturdy and the pictures which were taken in the bright sun show the condition well. There are no holes, repairs or stains and there is a nice patina throughout. the plaque measures 13 1/2 inches in diameter.
