STUNNING 1890s BAR QUILT ~CHINESE COINS / ROMAN STRIPE Excellent wall hanging size, 79 x 55,
this quilt
came from a pioneering Colorado Family and had been in the family for
'as long as anyone could remember.' We'll
date it circa 1890 and for the lack of a better tag we'll call it
"Chinese Coins" or "Roman Stripe" pattern. We found a very similar
quilt in Barbara Brackman's Clues
in the Calico, pg. 36. This quilt is a fabric lover's dream! It is pristine; there is no loss to any of the fabrics and only two very tiny holes on two of the fabrics, only visible after thorough investigation. Made of mostly silks and satins (including the backing), it is entirely hand pieced, and the gold binding is hand sewn as well. It is thin, crisp, clean, presents very well and the colors are phenomenal. There is no quilting, as can been seen in the pictures and each row is surrounded by a chicken track type cross stitch, true to 1890s Crazy Quilt construction. It is difficult to see from the pictures, but the two outer rows' fabric sequence nearly match each other, as do the two inner rows, while the very center row has its own distinct pattern of fabric. This careful attention to detail is as splendid as the quality of material found throughout the quilt. Truly a museum quality piece! Please ask questions and/or send answers.
