WINSLOW HOMER WOOD BLOCK PRINT ~HARPERS 1874 "SEE SAW' Excellent frame, expensive custom matte
and under glass, from our Scottsdale estate, offering a hard to find
Winslow Homer wood block print from HARPER'S WEEKLY, SEPTEMBER 12,
1874. The title of the work is "SEE SAW, GLOUCESTER,
MASSACHUSETTS." Harper's helped pioneer the multi-woodblock
technique for faster production to allow addition of original art into
its publication. From Prints Old & Rare: "Winslow Homer was not only the 19th Century's most popular artist and illustrator, but he is also considered one of the most important American artists of all time. The warmth and charm with which he interpreted the American experience has enchanted generation after generation." Pictured are six boys on a see saw and three girls playing a string game, all but one with a straw hat. Also, pictured is a neat Whale weathervane high atop the Bait Shop in the background. As mentioned, the frame and matte are excellent; the woodblock has a tear at the title, which is partially missing; there is very minor foxing and yellowing. Has been mounted on proper acid free material. The frame is 21 3/4 inches by 17 inches. The woodblock trades unframed for as much as $250. Domestic shipping UPS Ground insured $25 (oversized).
