Jessie Bryon Trefethen Watercolor
(Item: TREFETHEN1)

JESSIE BRYON TREFETHEN - (1882-1978) - American

Jessie Bryon Trefethen (1882-1978) "Art Deco Fountain" is the subject matter of this fine watercolor, pencil and gouache painting on paper. This fine work comes from the artist's personal collection/estate that was acquired from Jessie Trefethen's Niece's Son. . The painting measures 12 1/2 inches high by 7 inches across. This painting could possibly be a sketch proposal for an exhibition poster for the Portland Society of Fine Art. There were many works by Ms. Trefethen specifically designed for this purpose. The painting is identified in pencil on the back "Trefethen" and there is a small sticker with the inventory number written on it 86-4 (2)-13. Jessie B. Trefethen was born on Peaks Island, Maine and her family is one of the original settlers of the Island. There is also a town called Trefethen, Maine that is named after her family. She was a student and member of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and of the Portland Society of Art where she exhibited on a regular basis and the LMD Sweat Memorial Art Museum. She later became an art teacher in Oberlin, Ohio at Oberlin College which is just a few miles away from Cleveland. She painted in France, England and Italy from 1909 to 1911. We have several works of hers from that period. She also painted on Desert Island, Monhegan Island, and in Portland, Maine. She had many one woman exhibtions through her career. She rarely offered her paintings for sale thus, most of the works known to have been executed by her were kept by her or her family members. Not many are in public hands, thus she is relatively unknown large scale. There are a few in the Oberlin Collection, the Portland Society of Art and the Peaks Island, Maine historical society. We have acquired many of her exhibited paintings and early works prior to 1950 that feature locations other than just her seascapes which are her most common works. We also have a large assortment of pieces of her early travels through Mexico, France, Italy, and England along with her 1920's and 1930's works of Maine. She is listed in Who Was Who of American Women Artists, Dictionary of American Artists of the 19th and 20th Century, published in 1929, Who Was Who in American Art and others.
