Mose Tolliver Painting Mose Tolliver was born in 1920, and is a lifetime resident of Montgomery, Alabama. He is one of a dozen children, and supported his large family with many different jobs until he was injured in a furniture factory accident. He started painting to pass the time, using common housepaint and scraps of plywood. People from all around would come buy his paintings from him, out of his front yard. In 1982, his work was featured in a landmark exhibition of Black American Folk Art at Washington, D.C.'s Corcoran Gallery, attended by many important people of the time, including first lady Nancy Reagan. Suddenly, Mose was a "STAR" and he is recognized as one of the most significant folk painters in America. Collectors from far and wide are seeking out his work. Mose no longer is paiting as his health is failing His favorite subjects continue to be self-portraits, family members, nature; including flowers, birds, swayback horses, turtles, his popular "Freedon Buses,", crucifix's, mechanical items and erotica. It is the childlike spirit of Mose Tolliver that manifests in his paintings and that appeals to many, many people.
