(Item: KOPIETZS)

Edmund Kopietz - American - (1900-

Charter Member of the Prairie Printmakers

Born in Everest, Kansas, Edmund Kopietz was a painter, lithographer, illustrator, and teacher. From 1923 to 1928, he taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and from 1929 to 1950, taught at the Minneapolis School of Art. He was also a text book illustrator including a Spanish text book titled "La Feunte de los Calaveros."

He studied at Wichita University, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design.

Edmund Kopietz was honored by being the only artist invited to become a charter member of the Prairie Print Makers who did not live in Kansas at the time of the society’s inception.

C.A. Seward offered support to the young artist and gave Kopietz his first assignments as a free lance artist.

In 1920, through the assistance of Ed Davidson, Kopietz left Wichita to attend the Chicago Art Institute. After three years there, he was offered a part-time teaching position while he continued his studies. In 1928, he became a member of the staff of the Minneapolis School of Art and moved to Minnesota. The following year, he was named Director of the school.

His favorite medium is watercolor.
