J. J. Lankes Woodcut Julius Lankes, Born Buffalo, NY. August 31, 1884. Studied at Albright Art School, Buffalo, 1908-09. Boston Museum of Fine Arts, 1912-13. Married Edee Bartlett 1915, four children. Moved to Virginia 1925. Visiting professor, Wells College, Aurora NY, 1932-39. Academician, National Academy of Design, 1954. Died Durham, NC., April 20, 1960. Arguably the first genuine woodcut artist this country produced, Lankes was the close friend of poets and writers, and the author of the first reliable and comprehensive book on woodcutting published in North America. Wrote: "A Woodcut Manual - One of the foremost reference books on the tecnique of Woodcut! Woodcut - Pencil Signed & Dated 1920 Image Size: 3 3/4" X 5 3/4"
