A.A. OF D.C.S. GOBLET Convention Jan. 13, 1902 Chicago marked on base surrounded by a floral wreath on this beautiful and rare china goblet. Enclosed with this piece is a typed letter prepared by Jackson Thode giving the history and dated August 20, 1980. It reads, "About the turn of the century a professional trade organization was formed under the name of the American Association of Dining Car Superindents. First President of the group was Mr. Donald S. Fraser, Superintendent of Dining Car Service of the Denver & Rio Grande and Rio Grande Western railroads. In recognition of the new organization, at its first annual convention in Chicago in January 1902, this striking porcelain goblet was created by the Hotel Department of Chicago's Burley & Company and presented to the presiding officer of the AA of DCS. Down the years, as each succeeding President of the Association took office, he was awarded custody of the goblet. One presiding officer, a Superintendent of Dining Cars on the Union Pacific, during his term in office arranged for the manufacture by his shop people of the protective case seen here. In 1959 Mr. Calvin A Wall of Denver was elected President of the AA of DCS and the goblet thus, for the second time, came into possession of a Superintendent of Dining Cars on the Rio Grande. With the decline of railroad passenger service in the 1960's, the Association of Dining Car Superintendents suffered also. At its last convention, held in Denver, Mr. Wall approached the then incumbent President and related the history of this goblet. Since it had first been awarded to a Rio Grande man, and had been returned for yet another term, it was graciously allowed to remain in Denver. Now it occupies a prominent place among the archival materials relating to the history of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. This company, in 1980, remained the last and only passenger carrier in the United States to operate a railroad-owned dining car in regular, scheduled service." Written by Jackson C. Thode, Denver Colorado November 28, 1979, revised August 20, 1980. Hand painted with floral design on top & bottom edge this wonderful piece has a steam engine train encircling the cup. Measures 6 ½" tall and 3 ¼" diameter with gold trim. What a wonderful piece of history sure to be cherished for many years by the next caretaker. MINIMUM BID $250
