LOT 121 GREAT NORTHERN BUILDERS PLATE
(Item: CAT66/LOT121)
GREAT NORTHERN – Baldwin Locomotive Works builders plate dated July 1907. Burnham Williams & Co plate No. 31351 off of engine #1438 with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. Plate measures 12 ¼” with two mount holes. Brass plate in original condition with background painted black. Some scratches along the edges and a few light scratches in the fields. Engraved numbers on reverse, “12 38 ¼ D255”.
This particular engine has some documented notoriety in that the route it ran was through the Cascades which endured winter storms that caused repeated troubles for the Great Northern. This engine was one of 35 H-2 Pacifics ordered by the Great Northern and considered the most powerful passenger locomotives at that time. In December 1907 engine #1438 while pulling train #4 out of Skykomish was caught in the tunnel by two avalanches. This would become just one more of the troubles that the GN would endure while trying to make this route a viable option for the railroad. Concerned about the unfavorable press they were receiving in regard to the many hazards the trains would encounter on this route they were forced to eventually discontinue the service in these areas. As we always say if only these wonderful pieces of history could talk! This information can be found in its entirety at the following link: http://www.gnflyer.com/GlacierP.html
A nice plate from a great engine & a great addition to your builders plate collection. MINIMUM BID $800
