Yoshitoshi Woodblock An interesting and historical woodblock by Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892). Print from the series titled “Wakan Kidan Kagami” (“The Mirror of the Strange Tales from Japan and China”) and depicts Han Dan’emon Naoyuki killing a ghost while he was training in the mountains. He later became a vassal of Toyotomi Hideyori (the son of Hideyoshi). Publisher is Kodama Matashichi. Circa 1880. The workmanship in the printing of these sheets is “typical Meiji”—colors often using stronger reds and purples and a pronounced use of depth and perspective. Fair to good condition—no tears, no wormage, bright, fresh colors—does have vertical centerfold. (Note—margins are not toned—they’re woodblock printed a brownish color.) Print is roughly a half-sheet (“chuban”) and measures 7 x 9 1/8 inches.
