Leon Dabo 1865-1960 Leon Dabo was called by the French art critics "the best American painter". Although recent investigations show that he was actually born in France. He was noted as a colorist. He emphacised, particularly in his landscapes, the blocks of color and form. He was also well loved for his floral paintings which are easily distinguished by their elegance, simplicity, clarity and the resemblance oriental floral paintings.He was one of thirteen painters selected for the Armory Show in New York. Certainly Dabo is represented in nearly every museum of note. This piece is an oil on artboard. It has never been cleaned and is fresh to market.The size measures 5 1/2"x 7". It is signed ,dated and monogrammed lower left. On the reverse of the painting it reads; ST. Tropez,1940. Leon Dabo,Sand Dunes. There is a French artboard label. This painting is set and matted measuring 8 1/2"x 10 3/4". The painting is in the origanal frame, most likely made by the artist. There is a light for illumination incorporated in the frame. Frame retains original paint with a few green specks. Although a small painting it is one of Mr. Dabo's better St.Tropez seascapes. He achieves a great expansive view and makes good use of sutle colors.In very good, original condition.
This biography from the Archives of AskART: Newly discovered research has shown that Leon Dabo, landscape painter, muralist, writer and lecturer, was born in France in 1865 and not as previously thought in Detroit in 1868. (This can be verified at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Dabo was a student of John La Farge, Puvis de Chavannes, and James McNeil Whistler. In 1910, he participated in the "Independents" exhibit organized by The Eight in New York City, and in 1913, he was one of the principle organizers of the Armory Show that introduced modernist art to the United States. In 1917, Dabo was commissioned and sent to France in A.E.F. Corps of Interpreters. He lectured on Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Columbia University in the 1920s, and in 1933 exhibited his flower painting and pastels at Knoedler Gallery, New York. The "New York Times" in its review stated that these paintings were "a distinct contribution to be associated with the flower harmonies of Odilon Redon and of Fantin-Latour." In 1944 in his 79th year, Dabo was elected full Academician of The National Academy of Design. He painted until his ninetieth year, and in 1960 died in New York City on November 7th.
