1860's Alexander Roux Walnut Pedestal
(Item: 1716J)

Sorry, This Item Is SOLD!!!

1860's Alexander Roux Walnut Pedestal with Eagle Heads & Hoof Feet

This beautiful pedestal for either a fern or bust is attributed to Alexander Roux and was produced in the 1860's. Alexander Roux was a French immigrant come to New York City. He had three marriages and 6 children. At one time he employed 125 people. His factory backed up to George Hunzinger's and was partially destroyed by fire in 1877. The height of his career was around 1870 and he retired in 1881. His son continued the business until 1898. This walnut and gold gilt pedestal features three eagle heads with laurel and ribbons cascading from their beaks. The laurel & ribbons are walnut with gold gilt covering them. There is one 3" long piece of wooden "ribbon" missing under one eagle head. The center column is reeded, and the base is tri-corner with hoof feet. There are gold gilt covered medallions at several point surrounding the base. The finish is original and the gilt has not been touched up. There are a few old worm holes around the base, but it is in excellent condition for its age. Dimensions of the pedestal are: 43 3/8" tall and 12 ½" in diameter. It can be purchased alone for $1,995.00, or purchased as a set with the walnut library desk, Item No. #1715J, for $4,490.00. The regular price for both pieces would be $4,990.00, so this is a 10% discount. It is an exceptional example of fine quality Rococo furniture, and we are fortunate to be able to offer these three wonderful matching pieces.
