1860's Alexander Roux Walnut Library Desk
(Item: 1715J)

Sorry, This Item Is SOLD!!!

1860's Alexander Roux Walnut Library Desk with Eagle Heads & Hoof Feet

This is the final piece which is part of a set of three matching furniture pieces attributed to a famous French cabinet maker, Alexander Roux. Alexander Roux immigrated to New York City. He employed 125 people in his factory. The height of his popularity was around 1870. He produced Gothic, Rococo, Renaissance, and Louis XV furniture. Many of his pieces are seen in museums across America, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in several private collections. This lovely walnut desk is rectangular with rounded ends. The edge is beveled. It features double out-facing eagle heads with laurel wreaths and ribbons in their beaks on each leg with reeded centers, ending in double hoof feet. The apron of the desk has a repeating scroll pattern all around with gold gilt highlighting to match the other pieces. There is an acanthus patterned stretcher on each end of the desk. The base and apron finish is original, and the gold gilt is in good condition, with a slight amount of flaking from age here and there. The gilt has not been touched up. There are a few very old worm holes here and there, but they do not detract from the beauty of this desk and are not noticeable. It appears that the writing surface has been refinished to match the old finish, and done very nicely. Dimensions of the desk are 47" long, 25 3/8" wide, and 30 7/8" tall. We consider this set to be among the most unusual furniture we have ever offered at our store, and we feel they deserve a special spot in the home of someone who appreciates museum quality furniture. The desk is offered alone at $2,995.00, or as part of a set with the walnut pedestal, Item No. #1716J, for $4,490.00. The regular price for both pieces would be $4,990.00, so this is a 10% discount.
