Circa 1880-90 Mahogany Drop Front Ladies Secretary with Cabriole Legs & Claw Feet

This classic piece is in very good and room-ready condition. It is solid mahogany, with acanthus leaf applied carving on the drop front, heading around the lower edge, and a carved design on the lower front edge. The desk rests on 4 gracefully arched cabriole legs ending in 3-toe ball & claw feet. The arch of each leg is carved in an acanthus pattern. The top of the desk has a mahogany gallery supported by brass pillars. The desk was refinished at some time in the past 30 years. The interior of the desk is a darker mahogany tone. The pigeon holes, pen holder, and two drawers are complete and in good condition. There are some heavy pen marks on the writing surface, probably from a child, in one area. The drop front has two stress/age cracks from use, right where the slide out supports for the writing surface are. They do not detract from the beauty of this piece and are part of its originality. Dimensions of this fine drop front desk are: 42" tall to the top of the gallery, 19 ½" deep at the widest part of the legs, and 30" wide at the widest part of the legs. The lower drawer is 23" wide and 3 ½" tall. All hardware is original and present. There is a key which works the drop front lock. A very graceful desk that would make a great entry way or hall piece!
