1860's Victorian Ebonized European Etagere'
(Item: 0965)

Sorry, This Item Is SOLD!!!

1860's Victorian Ebonized European Etagere'

Called a what-not shelf now, this very formal and heavily carved etagere' came from a plantation in Atlanta, Georiga. It is very European in design of French and/or German origin. The canopy has a lion in relief in the center, flanked by carvings of flowers and scalloping (see pictures). The base supports are barley twists with squared edges. Each mirror is surrounded by flowers (see picture). There are ladies heads carved on each upper side of the door. It is ebonized (black) with spelter figures of knights, each 12 1/2" tall (see pictures). They are different, but the same size. They are holding up the canopy top. The door plate is also spelter (A zinc alloy used often in the mid 1800's, similar to pewter). The dimensions of the plate are 6 1/2" wide, 12 1/4" long. It features a woman in flowing robes (see picture). There are three shelves inside the door. The original key is still with the etagere'. The feet have five claw toes. The three mirrors are the original beveled glass and have a few minor imperfections, which are not detrimental to the piece. This piece has a couple of spots where minor repairs were made a long time ago by the lions head (see picture). Because this piece is very old and in unrestored condition, it is very delicate. The center section has a very slight granity dip to it, which could be supported better. It is extremely old and very fine. It is doubtful you will see many of these around, except in museums. The dimensions are 76" tall, 48 3/4" wide, and 14" deep. We are the third known owners of this wonderful piece. It deserves a special home with someone who will see that it makes it well into the new millenium!
